Training - First Time Managers: How to be Successful Leaders in an International Company

This workshop is designed for Chinese professionals accessing for the first time a management position with team responsibility within an international company. This module is an introduction to the topic aimed at getting participants quickly to the job. 

The originality of the program lies in the fact that while rooted in the Chinese culture and applying western leadership and management theories, it will also include other practical breathing and body techniques to heighten effectiveness and trigger change. It will be facilitated in a coaching mode. 

Participants will learn how to adopt the right posture when leading their team members as well as when interacting with Western managers. They will discover how to lead their members towards performance, they will also practice unleashing their own potential and enlarge their repertoire. Participants will finally design their own action plan at the end of the module.

1/ Introduction

• Introducing the program, its objectives, agenda, and timing

• Participants expectations towards the program and experiences with the topic

• What is being a manager? What is being a leader?

2/ What is leadership – Focusing on you 

• Changing focus: From being a follower to leading projects and teams – The difference between power and leadership

• Identifying one’s own preferred leadership style and developing awareness of its impact onto others. 

• Adapting one’s natural leadership style towards increased efficiency with team members

3/ Introduction to team-work and fighting spirit

• What is teamwork? Developing a strong team and fighting spirit

• How to apply it to daily activities and to improve team drive as well as team performance. Focusing on targets and achieving goals

4/ Developing communication skills

• Developing assertiveness 

• Speaking with impact

• Inspiring others

5/ Wrap-up and drawing a personal action plan with key steps to success till the next session

Sylvie Tournier
Senior Consultant, Trainer, and Coach

Sylvie is an enthusiastic Mandarin speaking consultant specializing in cross-cultural communication, management, and leadership with 20 years of business experience in global environments. She has worked in her career with managers from over 40 nationalities.

She consults, trains, and coaches for global companies across activity sectors. She is passionate about helping managers and leaders meet their challenges and contributing to increase the company’s overall performance. She accompanies many western managers dealing with China and Chinese leaders dealing with the the Fr ench. She finally teaches at ESSEC business school continuous education.

She moved to China 2005-2008, managing teams and leading business activities in Shanghai. She has also lived and worked in France, USA, and Germany. She finally speaks fluently four languages (French, her mother tongue, English, Chinese, and German). She currently resides by Paris, France, traveling to other parts of Europe and to China three times a year.
